Things we liked in 2014

I have to admit I'm a little bit behind the curve of this years paraphernalia, but here's what we dug, in no particular order:

Head Of Wantastiquet - Live at Mystery Train Records- Paul played a beautiful set of Roy Montgomery filtered through Sandy Bull if he was born in the Appalachia Mountains. Great secret weapon, too. and no, I'm not going to tell you what it is, it's a secret.

Spotify - Yeah, I know you're thinking "Fuck Them!", but where else can you listen to a new release where the artist is getting some $$, even if it is diddley squat. Our own "research" at pk headquarters shows our subjects actually spent more on music this year than in the last 5 years. Remember every time you down load something from a blog or p to p, no one's getting paid...

Expandable Brass Band - Live at The Northampton Jazz Festival - I have to admit I was scared this "festival" would be hours of cocktail weenie music ; glad I was wrong. Easily the best ensemble of the day, bringing the New Orleans Hurricane party to a bunch of uptight suits whose idea of relaxing is putting on a pair of Dockers. These rambunctious men and women don't play out that often, so get to their gigs while you have a chance to see them.

The Clean - Live at Rough Trade - I've waited 25 years (!) for this show and even being stranded on Flatbush Ave in Bed-Stuy for a few hours in the middle of the night wasn't going to put me in a bad mood. Highlights were slowed down versions of "Fish" and "Diamond Shine".  Plus I met many people who traveled far and wide that I never thought I would even see in the flesh.

Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath - One of the best afrobeat bands covering one of the best heavy metal bands. What else is there to say but pick this up - bang your head and shake your azz simultaneously

Fuckin' Record Reviews - A blog that's doing it's best to bring back the hay day of  Zines (1980's-1990's) focusing on the micro underground, when people had to directly write to the person putting out the record/zine sometimes hoping that you're not getting ripped off and those who carry that torch today. You also get the skinny of today's taste makers when they used to play to empty rooms- check out several posts about the early days of Yo La Tengo. Plus their best of 2014 list is huge!

Yo La Tengo - Extra Painful - Deluxe re-issue of their 1993 debut on Matador for their 30th (!) anniversary . I remember it like yesterday playing the Asparagus Song 7" every radio show I did that year. By 1993 this band was on fire with this release and the related tour stops were jaw dropping. For those of you who think bonus tracks are throwaways, don't miss the ones on this set. It really shows how these songs develop and change.

do we really need another "blog"?

A question I've been asking myself as I see every Dr. / clinic / hospital in the valley....Gotta find someway to kill time w/o killing trees..so have you seen the enormous amount of Pink Floyd you tube videos out there? Talk of a new album with Richard Wight with is actually started in 1968 is supposedly being released Nov. 12. I'll keep holding my breath.....I've put Jay Hinnman of Super Dope and Dynamite Hemorrhage plus (E)xpressway to Your Skull's Erika Elizabeth may be joining him on Suicide Watch . Remember that Nothampton Jazz Fest?? Well Byron Coley had a few words to say about chanteuse Kendra Smith. There's a 6 page interview Byron did with Kendra for fun that won't be published and as far as any of the Opal, Kendra Smith or the Temporal Adventurers being re-released, Kendra says tape them from a friend..Total Bummerr, I know....I did however get a beautiful package from one Barbara Manning- A sewing kit that included a usb of every one of her solo live shows, I think the only stuff missing is from World of Pooh, but I could be wrong, you will be all right if you ask for a kit from Barbara, if she feels like making you one, try http://barbaramanning.bandcamp.com/ and tell her I sent you.....That's all for now, lets see how many more hospitals I can visit this month..
